Perth Media Adapters are now available as short films, as well as 600-word written columns.

Adapters is a Perth Media brand that profiles news stories about small businesses, start-ups and not for profit organisations in Australia. After one year trialing a successful written content service, the company is extending the Adapters service to video productions - Adapters Short Films.

Marina’s Ambrosia is the first one!

Adapters has profiled many dynamic people driving innovative Australia enterprises so far.

Some of these became subjects in the Adapters print series published online by WA Business News. They gave thousands of readers an insight into the people creating our new work environment.

Perth Media services have adapted and grown to meet rising demand for video production.

“We’re finding more and more clients want to use film to tell their stories and connect to customers ,” Ms Rocchi said.

“So we are offering clients the opportunity to make short videos about their products and services, at a modest fee. Many have tried to make films themselves at home, but found the quality has been poor and they appreciate the input of media professionals. It also saves them time and stress, they don’t have to worry about being amateur film makers now. They can just visit our Nedlands office, talk to an interviewer and our team with produce a fabulous short film.”

Client companies will be able to use videos on their websites and in media releases and social media and YouTube channels, knowing the material is professionally produced and edited.

“We expect our business community will be interested in this service as a means of keeping up with modern media,” Ms Rocchi said. “Client businesses evolve, and we must, too, if we are to offer a comprehensive, useful service.”

Perth Media, which is based in Nedlands, Perth, began in 2015 and is owned by Ms Rocchi, a former finance reporter. Her journalism experience took her from WA and into some of the world’s biggest financial publishing houses in Hong Kong and London.

“I imagine Perth Media will offer more media content services to dovetail with videos,” Ms Rocchi said. “We will be guided by feedback from clients. But what we can say is that we continue to see a big future for video, and we are improving our services to assist our clients connect with their customers and stakeholders.”

Adapters: Perth Startup Ajero Brings Digital Know-how to Oil and Gas Decommissioning

Three oil and gas industry executives have found a way to tap into a $35 billion pool of opportunity in the waters around Australia, with the launch of their company Ajero Pty Ltd.

They have identified an emerging new market from the decommissioning of old pipelines and offshore installations.

Ajero has developed a Software as a Service (SaaS) based platform - complete with algorithm/engine - to facilitate the decommissioning process for the oil and gas industry by helping to determine the best way forward to clear the world’s oceans of abandoned offshore installations.

Ajero is the brainchild of Perth local, Farzan Marfatia. “Australia is just starting to decommission its offshore oil and gas facilities. There are up to 80 offshore facilities and only a handful have been decommissioned,” he says.

“But procedures and standards for decommissioning are ambiguous. We’re striving to bring consistency and logic to the planning and decommissioning process, while keeping the industry up to date with the latest technologies and methods available.”

With often hundreds of millions of dollars provisioned to decommission a facility, the need to successfully navigate the minefield of legislation, regulation and opinion has never been more important.

 “Legislation calls for complete removal and rehabilitation,” Mr Marfatia says. “Literally, it means oil and gas companies must leave the title area how they received it.

"Complete removal is not always the best solution because new environmental research suggests that subsea equipment turned into an artificial reef or marine habitat may be beneficial to the environment. There is some evidence fish stocks improve around pipelines and infrastructure. So, the question is whether complete removal is really the best solution."

It’s a critical point, given that airlifting and excavation is often used for removal of equipment, but can significantly disturb seabeds and marine habitats, and remedial work must meet international maritime conventions to which Australia is a signatory.

The overall cost of decommissioning Australia’s fields is estimated at US$24 billion (AU$35 billion) over 30 years. With companies now required to have a decommissioning plan, Ajero developed software to independently assess each project efficiently at reduced cost using tested and validated algorithms.

Mr Marfatia combined his expertise as a project engineer with that of two former colleagues, Peter Walton, now Ajero’s managing director, and David McLeod, CFO/finance manager.

They targeted decommissioning work, reckoning that a digital platform could plough through the sea of regulatory and environmental issues faster and more efficiently than consulting hours. The digital technology provides the end user the ability to run through several decommissioning scenarios, while considering personnel safety and impact to the environment. Furthermore, the auto generated reports are immediately available to the user once the relevant information has been entered and agreed in a 'HAZID' style workshop. The report's format is consistent each time, which will help regulators reviewing the documents.

The result is an annual subscription service for Ajero software that can perform in-house, in one week, what usually takes an outsourced consultancy up to 18 weeks. The cost savings are significant.

“If an operator wants to leave some structures in place when decommissioning, there are questions," Mr Marfatia says. "What do they leave? What do they remove? And how likely is it to be accepted by the regulator? Ajero software platform can provide the solutions."

Aside from offshore oil and gas operators, Ajero has recently signed agreements with two global management consulting firms to explore the platform's use for the legal and insurance industries.

Adapters: Perth Media Films and Script Writing Wins Business for Our Clients

Perth Media public relations firm is increasing collaborations with Australian film makers to tell corporate clients' stories.

 Bristow has been a highlight. Working with Courtney Waller Productions, dramatic footage depicted a rescue by helicopter at sea. The resulting film was used as a tool to pitch for business.

“We told the story of the people behind Bristow, their striving for excellence and how that drove them to perform daring rescues safely,” Rocchi said.

"The work is indicative of how our small public relations company has evolved into a multi-media firm. We work closely with film makers to ensure the right footage is shot and films are scripted and edited carefully to include correct messages, crucial facts and other important material. Our clients are typically extremely busy, and don't have media experience, we are stepping into film production because films are extremely effective at connecting with audiences. For businesses, that means good films are winning new contracts and investors."

Torrance Mendez, Perth Media’s creative digital consultant, has written several scripts.

At the height of the bitcoin frenzy, he wrote a script to launch the newly formed International Council for the Virtual Economy which was agitating for a regulatory body for virtual currencies.

“Fortunes were being made overnight but there was genuine concern that virtual currencies posed unacceptable risk that included money laundering,” Mendez recalled.

The narrative had to support the currencies because they created wealth, and cautiously introduce the benefits of a regulatory body. The video was launched in Dubai.

Bernard Shaw, director of Perth-based Red Empire Media production company, hired an American narrator and shot a fast-paced film.

“Our clients gave us great feedback on Perth Media being able to grasp the sometimes difficult and unusual concepts,” Shaw said. “This was particularly so when writing a script for the International Council for the Virtual Economy, which needed a strong understanding of the banking industry.”

Companies generally want videos to promote a product or service or to raise money for projects.

Another WA firm Callidus wanted to promote its unique services, customer focus and high engineering skills, once again Perth Media's script writing came to the party, working with Courtney Waller Productions.

1.   Making the World a Better Place. Many of the world's best and brightest creatives are focused on making money but also making the world a better place, proving profits and good deeds can mix. Perth-based social media marvel Ming Johanson has a checklist for new projects. 'Does it serve me, others, my business, and the greater good?' Speakers assisted a staggering number of charities. Jimmy Niggles from the Beard Season, US-based Justin Gignac from Working Not Working, were two who have donated extraordinary amounts of time and effort to great causes.

2. The Google guys from Tokyo, Tim Sneddon and Gene Brutty, (originally from Perth) rocked. Their 20 slide presentation in 20 minutes with gems such as 'uncomfortable is good, stay there' and 'waiting is for the lazy' was only topped by their Artificial Intelligence workshop, with kits. Awesome, inspiring, learnt so much.

3. The gen below the millennials/Gen Z are are into fun, says Neil Ackland of Punkee Media. They  are often watching video without sound, and looking for short/mashable/home-made/funny/quirky clips about random stuff that doesn't have to matter or mean something. Punkee is hiring super young, clever creatives that can write, shoot and edit, at a fast pace. If brands want to target the kids, then make it fast paced and random/funny.

4.  Lightbulb moment. Why aren't staff of the companies/organisations Perth Media works for embracing social media of their employers? Well, aside from the fact it could be crap. 'Because they have their own personal brand, and they don't want to link their brand with your company/organisation because they don't want to hang around for long,' says Perth-based Ming Johanson, who tells it how it is.

5.   Mat Lewis, Erin Molloy and team at Emergence are seriously good at what they do. The room was filled with exceptional global talent, including Chloe Rickard (Jungle Entertainment who just produced ABC's Squinters); international photographer Sam Harris; music industry lawyer Fran Cotton; Phil Bonanno of Facebook and many many more. Unbelievable line-up all in Margaret River. Really, this festival exceeded expectations.

6.  AI as a tool,  linked with google, has a long way to go, but it is coming. It wasn't too clever in demos, but it successfully answered qus about the weather. Lots of ramifications. ‘Inspiring Farmers to Lead Profitable Businesses’

Partners in Grain WA (PinG WA) expects more than 200 businesswomen from Western Australia’s Wheatbelt to attend its second INSPIRE Summit at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle from March 27-28.

PinG WA Chair Bronwyn Fox, who lives in Dandaragan, said: “I am delighted to announce the second PinG WA INSPIRE Summit is nearly sold out. This year more than 200 leading rural businesswomen from all over Western Australia will come together again in Perth to learn and improve their business skills and network with other successful agribusiness owners.”

Mrs Fox said the PinG WA Summit and its many workshops held in WA’s regions, in the past few years, focused on learning successful farm business skills. “Farm business skills are not just about increasing production,” she said. “Production is key, but managing costs and markets are also imperative.”

“Good leadership is also important, and that is about empowering the people around you and understanding a team approach is essential to a successful farm business.”

Women attending the conference will travel from across and beyond the traditional Wheatbelt areas – as far as Gascoyne River in the north across to Southern Cross and the Esperance region. There are also women from varied enterprises as well as just grain farmers. In the past Bronwyn’s Dandaragan farm has grown canola, wheat and barley and now grows lupins for sheep flocks but specialises in potatoes, reflecting the growing diversity of WA’s agribusiness sector and the fact that the conference program will be attractive to farming businesses generally, not solely grain growers.

The two-day summit is aimed at women who already know the fundamentals of operating a farm business but are keen to learn more. Differentiating it from other conferences, and ensuring the focus remains true to its objectives, INSPIRE is only open to farmers, sponsors and speakers. The event is nearly fully booked with less than 10 spots remaining.

Speakers include: Matina Jewell (sponsored by Plum Grove) lessons of leadership and resilience; Nadine Campion (sponsored by the RRR Network) on 10 Seconds of Courage; Dr Cheryl Kalisch Gordon (Rabobank Senior Grains & Oilseeds Expert); Esther Jones (Nailing It: presenting well and articulating your message); and Dr Joyce Chong (The Skill Collective) on wellbeing. There will also be informative sessions on managing risks and a host of growers sharing skills and experiences within the panel and concurrent sessions.

INSPIRE Coordinator Erin Green, who is also a grain grower in Yuna (north-east of Geraldton), and past PinG WA Coordinator said: “As a not-for-profit, the opportunities PinG WA provides are otherwise unavailable or inaccessible to farmers. Over the five years I’ve been involved, PinG has delivered approximately 100 training events across WA to about 1400 growers. Although this event is aimed at women, more than 30% of PinG participants overall have been men. After PinG WA events were held, 99% of participants recommended the training to other growers.”

The event’s official partners are Rabobank and Plum Grove, while sponsors are RSM, Planfarm, HopgoodGanim Lawyers, Grain Industry Association of Western Australia and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Project funding has been secured with the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the RRR Network and the Department of Communities’ Grants for Women.

Rabobank regional manager for Western Australia Crawford Taylor said Rabobank was delighted to again be supporting the INSPIRE Summit. “The first summit was such a success, showcasing the crucial role women play in their business, community and family,” Mr Taylor said. “The 2018 Summit will build on that positive momentum, providing women with the opportunity to further develop their leadership and management skills. And this includes understanding global consumer trends and how grain growers can position their business to stay ahead of the game, with the bank’s grains analyst Cheryl Kalisch Gordon to set the scene by delivering the first presentation of the summit.”

Partners in Grain WA (PinG WA) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides locally relevant, personalised training for Western Australian broadacre farmers. As a state based organisation PinG WA has an alliance with similar entities covering NSW, QLD, Vic/Tas and SA. Each state entity operates according to its growers needs.

Wheat production occurs across the WA Wheatbelt on 4000, mostly, family-run farms ranging in size from 1000 to 15,000 hectares. WA generates 8-10 million tonnes of wheat per annum which is 50% of Australia’s total annual wheat production.
